Under the general direction of designated supervisor, advises undergraduate students about specific academic programs and policies of a school/college/division and counsels them regarding appropriate educational and career goals.
GUIDELINES FOR USING THE POSITION
Incumbents in this position are expected to function independently and to apply the broader counseling skills in helping students plan an appropriate academic program. They are also expected to work closely with students, faculty and other University offices to trouble-shoot and resolve problems that interfere with the successful completion of that program.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advises and counsels students in planning an academic program as it relates to their educational and career goals.
- Counsels students in specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines and related matters.
- Reviews student transcripts and assists in making decisions regarding transfer of major within or into college/school, requests for excess credit, double major or dual degrees.
- Interprets academic regulations and serves as a resource for students, faculty, parents and others having questions about programs, academic policies, scholarship/award opportunities and other pertinent information; makes referrals as appropriate.
- Monitors student progress and works closely with faculty and other University offices to identify and resolve problems.
- Reviews and makes recommendations regarding warning, exclusion, suspension or dismissal; provides additional counseling to warned students, those with academic difficulties and students contemplating withdrawal.
- Provides personal and other non-academic counseling as appropriate.
- Works closely with other University offices to promote consistency and uniformity of judgments regarding such matters as enforcement of academic requirements, academic probation and dismissal, transfer in or out of program and other similar issues.
- Identifies problems with policies and regulations and recommends changes.
- Plans and is responsible for scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs, career planning workshops and other similar activities, as assigned.
- May be responsible for advising special student populations and works closely with other offices to foster academic success and retention.
- Compiles statistical reports and maintains appropriate files and records, which may be computerized.
- Writes and/or edits informational and publicity materials.
- May assist in recruiting new students and/or seeking job placement opportunities for graduating seniors.
- May supervise support staff and/or work-study students.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in counseling, education and related field
- 3 – 5 years experience in counseling and advising students.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and counseling skills
- Knowledge of academic programs in area to be served
- Ability to trouble shoot problems that interfere with the student’s academic progress and work effectively to resolve them.
- Knowledge of special student populations, if required by the position.
