Employee Tuition Waivers

Tuition Waivers are used for selected courses taken by certain employees and their certain dependents, defined by collective bargaining agreements and Board of Trustee actions, at any of the University of Connecticut campuses. Tuition waivers ONLY cover tuition, they cannot be applied to any fees, e.g. books, registration fee, application fees, etc, which the student may incur.

AFSCME Contract: Memorandum of Understanding in Higher Education

Extended to 2016 by SEBAC agreement.

The benefit is extended to University of CT AFSME (NP-3 only) employees for undergraduate credit courses. The University shall provide a waiver of tuition to degree seeking (Registrar’s Office) students on a space available basis.

Employee Tuition Waiver Online Form (required)

The availability of space and registration start dates shall be determined as follows:

  • Will be determined on the first day of classes for tuition based courses
  • Will be determined on the second day of classes for credit fee based courses

Additional Eligibility Considerations

  • The waiver applies to the Fall and Spring semesters only.
  • The waiver applies to undergraduate courses only.
  • Employee must be a permanent bargaining union member.
  • Employee must be employed a minimum of 50%. The waiver will be prorated to the percent of employment above 50%.
  • Employee’s most recent performance appraisal must have a good or better performance rating.
  • Employee must be a matriculating student or be taking credit courses that are job related.
  • There is a two-course limit per semester.

Specifically Excluded

General University fees; or any other fees are excluded.
Intersession, summer session, and graduate and laboratory classes are excluded.

Deadline

Fall Semester – October 15th
Spring Semester – February 28th

Important Additional Considerations

If a course(s) are taken during the employee’s regular working hours, a Temporary Flexible Schedule Request must be completed by the employee and approved by the designated supervisor out of the bargaining unit. Approved Flexible Schedule requests should be forwarded to Human Resources. Employees must use the separate Flexible schedule specific to their union.

The approving supervisor must be at least the 1st level supervisor outside of the AFSCME bargaining union.

(UCPEA) Article 34 of the the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association contract effective July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2011. Extended to 2016 by SEBAC agreement.

Management/Confidential,tuition waiver benefit extended by action of the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees.

The University shall provide a waiver of tuition (Registrar’s Office) or a partial waiver of credit fees, equivalent to tuition, (College of Continuing Studies) for undergraduate and graduate courses on a space available basis.  To qualify for a graduate waiver the employee must either be a matriculated student or the class must be work related.

The availability of space and registration start dates shall be determined as follows:

  • Will be determined on the first day of classes for tuition based courses
  • Will be determined on the second day of classes for credit fee based courses

The waiver applies to the Fall and Spring semesters only:

  • The employee must be employed a minimum of 50%. The waiver will be prorated to the percent of employment above 50%.
  • The employee must be either a matriculated student or taking courses that are job related.
  • There is no credit limit under the waiver program.
  • If the course(s) are taken during the employee’s regular working hours, a Temporary Flexible Schedule must be completed by the employee, and approved by the supervisor of the employee.

Please be advised that the HR deadlines are tentative, administrative deadlines are put in place to assist the administration of the above programs.  It is the responsibility of the student to adhere to the deadlines imposed by the offices of the Bursar and the Registrar.  Please contact those offices if you have questions about the deadlines related to late fees.

  • Available to: UCPEA, Management /Confidential and AFSCME employees.
  • UCPEA and Management/Confidential employees may pursue undergraduate or graduate coursework at the University of Connecticut, Storrs or any of its regional campuses.
  • AFSCME employees are only eligible to take undergraduate coursework.
  • There is no credit limit.
  • Lab courses are not permitted under the waiver.
  • Waivers are for the fall and spring semesters only.
  • Employees must be employed a minimum of 50%.
  • The percent of tuition waived is directly related to the employees percent of employment.
