Aim to establish a diverse search committee.
Select a committee chairperson that has the ability to lead people and has a thorough understanding of the position for which you are searching.
Determine how the committee will communicate with each other, the campus community, and with candidates. Identify a search administrator who will be responsible for providing administrative support to the search process.
Charge the search committee before beginning the search process and reiterate the importance of inclusion, the role of the committee, and the need for confidentiality
Ensure that the search committee has a thorough understanding of their role in the search process. For example, the search committee should identify the top five candidates in ranked order, the top five candidates with no rank, the top five candidates with no rank but comments, etc.
Establish goal timelines for the search and ensure that the search committee chair and members you choose can devote the time necessary to achieve your goals.
