Welcome to Caring about “U”Conn, a program that delivers sessions on a broad range of topics of professional and personal interest to faculty and staff.  The speakers and subject matter experts are primarily from the university, and on occasion we engage experts from the communities in which we live and work.

Sessions generally take the form of Lunchtime Learning, seminars, Eldercare Support Group and our collaboration with the Rainbow Center for the Friends and Family Plan".

Eldercare Monthly Meetings
Are you currently taking care of an elderly family member or friend?  Or thinking that you might need to care for someone elderly soon?  Come join us when you can for our Eldercare support group.  It meets every 2nd Thursday of the month from noon-1:00 at the Student Union, Room 320 for the Fall semester.  Our current format is to have an open meeting by  those attending who can share stories and ask questions.  From 1:00-1:30, Marion Donato from Senior Resources is available to meet with you one on one (first come, first serve).  No registration required.  If you would like to be on the Eldercare distribution list, please email Pamela.Heath-Johnston@uconn.edu.

Friends and Family Plan Monthly Meetings
Human Resources and the Rainbow Center are pleased to announce and support the monthly Friends and Family Plan program which offers opportunity for discussion and support for those who’ve recently had a friend, co-worker and/or family member “come out” about their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.  This may include, but is not limited to those revealing their identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender queer and transgender.  Whether you are surprised, shocked, delighted and/or you knew all along, we offer a space for you to discuss your thoughts and feelings, and share resources.  Friends and Family Plan Discussion is facilitated the first Thursday of the month at the Rainbow Center, 403 Student Union, from 12 noon-1 pm.  Feel Free to bring your lunch.

Just Move Yoga Walk
Come join us for a welcome back “Just Move” Yoga Walk.   This will be a 45 minute class with 7 minutes of warm-up yoga stretches, a 30 minute, fast-paced walk, and 7 minutes of cool down yoga stretches.  Meet on the walking track behind Greer Field house.  What to wear/bring:  light, loose clothing, sneakers or good walking shoes, towel or yoga mat, water

Husky Ally Safe Zone Training
The UConn Safe Zone symbol, a Husky Ally sticker, identifies one who has chosen a life-long journey to be educated about sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, and has information about local and national resources.  The 3-hour workshop offers a highly interactive learning experience about being an ally within and to the lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, genderqueer, pansexual, two-spirited campus community.  All sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions are needed to build a stronger ally campus community. Participants will find information applicable to their family and other valuable communities.  After training, the Husky Ally sticker is proudly displayed in the workplace, office, or residence hall room.  Continuing education opportunities will be provided to these Husky Allies.  All members of the UConn community are encouraged to attend: faculty, staff and students.  If interested as an individual, please e-mail your name, net id and preferred training date to huskyally@uconn.edu.  In order to preserve a quality educational experience for attendees, pre-registration is required.  If you are interested in the Husky Ally Safe Zone Training for a group, please contact the director of the Rainbow Center at fleurette.king@uconn.edu

Financial Identity Theft Protection
We live in a fast-paced, technological world. scammers are all around us, whose only goal is to steal your financial information to commit fraud. some are high-tech, and use their computer to attempt to steal personal financial information. Some are savvy, and use the telephone to try to scam us. Others simply steal our wallets or rummage through our trash.

What can you do to prevent this from happening? Your best defense is awareness. Learn important tips on how to avoid identity theft and minimize your risk of becoming a victim.

Retirement Benefits Seminar
This 90 minute seminar  includes an information session given by Terry Stewart from the Benefits unit in Human Resources on the State Employees Retirement System (SERS) pension benefits and the Alternate Retirement Program (ARP), including important Social Security, retiree health and life insurance information.  This will be followed by a presentation by Marty Baron, ING Financial Adviser.

USDA's MyPlate - Dietary Guidelines

Is it that time of year again? Sneezing and coughing? Can’t seem to escape all the bugs everyone is getting? Taking too many antibiotics? Then join Fran Storch, N.D., to find out how your diet, lifestyle, homeopathy, and basic supplementation can help you to head off some of those nasty bugs!

EAP: Effective Communication to Reduce Conflict 
Often times people assume the “negative” about conflict when in fact depending on how you resolve the conflict  it can actually strengthen a relationship and be productive rather than create hostility and resentment.  Come to this seminar and learn about cooperative approaches and using effective communication techniques to reduce conflict in your life both at work and at home.

Teaching Financial Facts of Life for Parents/Guardians of Teens & Early Twenties
In this session, we will focus on the need for teens and young adults to be financially knowledgeable and explore opportunities to encourage their financial capability, responsibility and independence.

Career Mapping
The Career Mapping workshop will include two components – one component will be on classification and the difference between the position an employee encumbers and them as individuals with career goals and aspirations.  The other component will be how to then map a career path for the future, whether it be within their position or elsewhere.

Email Etiquette @ Work
 This course provides guidelines for proper email etiquette with a focus on methods to improve and better manage your email communications.

An Overview of Medicare
