JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of designated supervisor and/or faculty member, provides routine technical assistance in support of the research, teaching or service activities of a department.

GUIDELINES FOR USING THE POSITION

This is considered an entry-level position.  Incumbents are expected to apply Bachelor’s degree level concepts, practices and procedures in a technical specialty.   Work is of routine difficulty and limited variety.  Incumbents work under the supervision of faculty member or supervisor but are expected to detect gross irregularities and act on own initiative in routine matters.  Problem solving and ingenuity limited to well-established or prescribed techniques and practices.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepares samples for analysis or testing according to prescribed procedures.
  2. Tests prescribed methods to ensure accuracy and consistency; makes minor modifications to ensure standardized results or correct gross errors.
  3. Using well-established methods and techniques performs tests or analyses according to prescribed specifications and guidelines; calculates results, evaluates findings in terms of compliance or non-compliance with established standards, documents procedures and reports findings to supervisor.
  4. Operates, tests and calibrates analytical instruments, equipment and related components; makes routine adjustments within established guidelines.
  5. Assists in maintaining in proper working order laboratory equipment, instruments and related apparatus, which may be highly specialized; trouble-shoots and resolves routine problems.
  6. Maintains necessary records, proper laboratory conditions and safety procedures.
  7. Assists students and others with technical problems related to laboratory techniques or equipment.
  8. Assists in conducting more complex analysis as requested.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in specialty appropriate to department to be served and 0 to 1 year experience.
  2. Familiarity with analytical equipment, standard laboratory techniques and fundamental concepts, practices and procedures in the technical specialty appropriate to department to be served.
  3. Ability to produce reliable results, problem-solve and trouble-shoot routine problems.
  4. Ability to perform minor maintenance and resolve routine problems with laboratory equipment.
  5. Knowledge of computers and programming may be required in some specialty areas.

OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  1. Familiarity with computerized databases.
  2. Knowledge of benefits programs.
