JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, performs library tasks of a complex nature applying advanced library techniques.

GUIDELINES FOR USING THE POSITION

Incumbents in this position are generally free to plan and arrange their own work within a wide range of methods and practices.  Work is periodically checked for progress and conformance to established policies and procedures.  Considerable opportunity exists for initiative and judgement in handling a normal range of problems.

There is usually a moderate variety of tasks performed.  Hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of student assistants may be required and may be a primary responsibility.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs almost exclusively advanced operations to provide bibliographic verification or control of library materials.  This includes the use of local and international automated systems.  Requires a thorough understanding of established methods and techniques and their application.
  2. Assists library users in situations requiring independent application of departmental policies and procedures to resolve complex problems.  Requires decision-making and limited authorization to make exceptions within defined guidelines.
  3. Processes records by evaluating and performing elementary analysis and straightforward interpretation of unit or departmental guidelines.  Refers complex issues to the unit or department head.
  4. Hires, schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates student assistants.  Writes and revises student training manuals.  Establishes and revises job descriptions for student workers based on departmental needs.  Assigns work and priorities in accordance with departmental policies.
  5. Interprets library and departmental policy and procedures, with considerable opportunity for independent judgement.  May share in decision-making that leads to the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  6. Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s Degree and one to three years of related experience or equivalent combination.
  2. Specialized skills as required.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently with detailed library records requiring the application of advanced library techniques to complex library tasks.
  4. Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages as required by departmental need.
  5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with library staff, University faculty and staff and the public regarding normal day to day problems.
  6. Demonstrated ability to keep up-to-date with advanced library practices, procedures or policies.
