Eligibility

A waiver of tuition is extended to employees in the following categories:

University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA)
Management and Confidential
AFSCME (Clerical Bargaining Unit)

Background

University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA) – The benefit for UCPEA is defined by Article 34 of the University of Connecticut Professional Employee Association contract effective July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2011, and as extended by the 2016 Statewide SEBAC Agreement.

Management and Confidential - The benefit for Unrepresented Management Exempt and Confidential Exempt employees is defined by action of the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees.

AFSCME (NP-3 Only) – The benefit for University of Connecticut AFSCME (NP-3 Only) employees is defined by a Memorandum of Understanding between the AFSCME and the University and is extended through June 30, 2022.

Employee Requirements

UCPEA / Management / Confidential
The employee must be employed a minimum of 50%. The waiver will be prorated to the percent of employment above 50%. For graduate-level courses, the employee must be either a matriculated student or taking for-credit courses that are job related. There is no credit limit under the waiver program. If the course(s) are taken during the employee’s regular working hours, a Temporary Flexible Schedule must be completed by the employee, and approved by the supervisor of the employee.

AFSCME
The employee must be a permanent bargaining union member. The employee must be employed a minimum of 50%. The waiver will be prorated to the percent of employment above 50%.The employee’s most recent performance appraisal must have a good or better performance rating.

The employee must be a matriculating student or be taking credit courses that are job related.

If a course(s) are taken during the employee’s regular working hours, a Temporary Flexible Schedule Request must be completed by the employee and approved by the designated supervisor outside of the AFSCME bargaining unit. Approved Flexible Schedule requests should be forwarded to the Office of Faculty and Staff Labor Relations. Employees must use the separate Flexible schedule specific to their union.

Applicability and Exclusions

The employee tuition waiver benefit applies to students taking undergraduate courses, students matriculating in a graduate program, or students taking job related graduate courses during the Fall and Spring semesters only. Intersession and summer session courses are specifically excluded, as are laboratory classes. The University provides a waiver of tuition or a partial waiver of credit fees, equivalent to tuition for undergraduate and graduate courses on a space available basis. The availability of space and registration shall be determined on the first day of classes for tuition based courses and on the second day of classes for credit fee based courses. There is no credit limit under the waiver program. General University fees and other fees are specifically excluded from the tuition waiver.AFSCME

Please Note: The Employee Tuition Waiver application for the spring 2022 semester will become available on Tuesday, January 18, the first day of classes. Please contact Human Resources at hr@uconn.eduto request Employee Tuition Waiver information from prior semesters.

The application is quick and easy, however it is critical that you review the procedural information provided as well as the information regarding eligibility and applicability and exclusions.

Waiver recipients may only register on the first or second day of classes.

Please note that a separate waiver request must be submitted each semester.
