Under the supervision of a clinical laboratory supervisor or other designated health professional or administrator, is responsible for the daily operations of patient specimen collecting, processing and handling and all administrative laboratory support functions so related as well as performing routine clinical tasks including selected diagnostics test on blood specimens.


  1. Performs phlebotomy and capillary punctures to obtain proper patient specimens. Executes proper specimen collection and preparation and recognizes sources of error.
  2. Performs analysis of blood samples, as required. Conducts routine chemical tests and examinations of blood specimens.
  3. Assists in quality control and other required tests to meet state certification and standards. Records all quality control and quality assurance activities, instrument and procedure calibrations and maintenance performed.
  4. Utilizes laboratory instrumentation and computers to process patient forms and data.
  5. Utilizes independent judgements and simple calculations regarding patient care and patient results. Recognizes and confirms abnormal results.
  6. Keeps records of tests performed and samples taken, including results from referral laboratory work.
  7. Schedules patient appointments and gives patient instructions as outlined for basic diagnostic procedures, treatments and specimen collections.
  8. Processes request from outside physicians. Processes all forms and administrative documentation related to receiving and obtaining clinical laboratory specimens, including but not limited to insurance processing. Maintains recorded documentation according to accepted medical/laboratory practices.
  9. Performs cholesterol screening. May be required to travel to off-site locations to administer screenings.
  10. Oversees and assists in training student workers.
  11. Properly disposes of biohazardous waste generated by the laboratory. Monitors and maintains inventory of office and/or laboratory supplies.
  12. Performs other related duties as required.


  1. Current medical office assistant or medical assistant certification or equivalent certification and current CPR certification.
  2. Two to three years experience in a medical office or clinical laboratory setting.
  3. Minimum two years phlebotomy experience.
  4. Demonstrated working skills and knowledge of current clinical laboratory procedures, techniques, equipment and laboratory safety practices; demonstrated medical office skills and experience with medical terminology.
  5. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, in addition to strong written and oral communications skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and under stressful conditions.
  7. Willingness to work flexible and irregular hours, including weekends to comply with department requirements, if applicable.
